Melusine – France
Nearest city: Lusignan, Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Melusine is a legendary French water spirit, often depicted as a beautiful woman with a serpent’s or mermaid’s tail. According to legend, she married Raymondin of Lusignan under the condition he never see her in her bath; when he broke the promise, she transformed and fled, condemned to haunt the castle forever. Her wailing apparition is said to appear in Lusignan Castle before a death in the family line. Melusine remains a powerful symbol of European folklore, influencing literature, heraldry, and even modern fantasy depictions of serpentine women.
