Ninki Nanka – West Africa

Nearest city: Banjul, The Gambia

The Ninki Nanka is a dragon-like creature said to haunt the mangrove swamps of The Gambia and wider West African coast. Described as a long, scaly, reptilian beast with a horse-like head, it is feared for bringing death or misfortune to those who see it. Folklore links it to drowned children and warnings against wandering into the marshes at night. In 2006, the Centre for Fortean Zoology mounted an expedition after local reports of recent sightings, gathering eyewitness accounts but no physical proof. The Ninki Nanka remains a staple of Gambian folklore and is occasionally referenced in modern documentaries on African legends.
