Commissioned in 1927 by railroad magnate Alex Johnson to showcase Native American art and host Black Hills travelers, the hotel opened its doors in 1928 and has welcomed U.S. presidents, celebrities, and thousands of tourists. Following Alex Johnson’s death in 1938, staff and guests began reporting that the founder never truly vacated his prized hotel, marking the start of a nearly century-long paranormal ledger that the hotel openly embraces through official guest logbooks.
