Case Overview
What happened at Sambro Island?
The haunting centers explicitly on a Scottish Royal Artillery soldier named Alexander Alexander, known natively to generations of lightkeepers as “Double Alex”. Stationed on the island alongside his old boyhood schoolmate, keeper William Gilkie, Alexander was dispatched to the Halifax mainland to secure the regiment’s payroll and essential winter rations. Instead of returning, Alexander squandered the entire collective military fund during a massive, multi-week drinking binge. Consumed by immense guilt and facing severe military court-martial charges upon his return to the island, Alexander committed suicide by hanging himself from a heavy iron spike driven into the structural framing of the lighthouse tower.
The resulting residual phenomena became a fixture of local historical ledgers, heavily documented by successive generations of the Gilkie keeping family. Field accounts from long-term residents and keepers detail highly physical manifestations; the spirit of Double Alex was routinely heard stomping heavily through the overhead stone chambers, flickering the station’s localized lighting arrays, and manifesting as a solid phantom sitting silently in the island kitchen dressed in his period military uniform.
Most uniquely, keepers tracking the site noted a distinct, localized olfactory anomaly—a heavy, unmistakable stench or pipe-smoke odor that would manifest inside supply boats traveling between the island and the mainland, serving as a warning to keepers that the entity was traveling back across the water with them. Today, the large iron suicide spike remains embedded in the stone walls of the lighthouse structure, serving as the physical anchor for an intense, highly localized electronic and sensory grid that consistently drains digital tracking batteries.
