Standing on the corner of Main and Beale Street, the historic Orpheum Theatre remains an architectural jewel of the American South that harbors a distinct, permanent resident from its vaudeville days. Originally built in 1890 as the Grand Opera House, the theater suffered a catastrophic fire in 1923 before being completely rebuilt into its current, opulent Beaux-Arts style. The core of the building’s paranormal history belongs to a single, recurring entity named Mary, a young girl in a pinafore dress who is believed to have been fatally struck by a streetcar outside the theater doors in 1921. Mary’s presence is remarkably woven into the operational fabric of the theater. She is most frequently seen sitting in Seat C5 of the balcony, or giggling as she runs down the aisles during rehearsals and soundchecks. Performers, stagehands, and touring Broadway casts consistently report seeing the heavy gold stage curtains swing on their own, finding sudden cold pockets in the dressing rooms, and hearing the distant, playful sound of a child running across the empty stage after the house lights are lowered. The phenomenon is so consistent that theater staff routinely leave Seat C5 open during opening nights, out of respect for the spectral patron
