Melon Heads – USA
Nearest city: Shelton, Connecticut

The Melon Heads of southwestern Connecticut are one of the region’s most enduring and aggressive urban legends, centered on a cluster of isolated roads in Fairfield County. Unlike other versions of the story, the Connecticut accounts describe small, spindly humanoids with oversized, bulbous heads and glowing orange eyes that dart through the undergrowth with a frantic, quadrupedal speed. The origin of the colony is a dark patchwork of local lore: some believe they are the inbred descendants of a colonial-era family banished for witchcraft, while others point to a group of patients who escaped a burned-asylum in the mid-20th century and retreated into the woods. A more specific and sinister version involves the shadowy Dr. Crowe (or Crow), a scientist rumored to have performed experimental cranial surgeries on children at a secluded woodland facility, only for his subjects to eventually turn on him and flee into the forest.
The legend isn’t tied to a single building but follows a specific corridor of high-strangeness, particularly Velvet Street in Trumbull—famously known to locals as “Dracula Drive”—and Saw Mill City Road in Shelton. The stretch of Saw Mill City Road running parallel to the Means Brook Reservoir is a primary hotspot where witnesses report seeing shadowy figures hunched at the water’s edge or hearing a distinct “clicking” vocalization from the treeline. One of the most famous era-specific accounts is the “Blue Granada” legend from the 1980s, in which a group of girls driving near Velvet Street claimed their car was swarmed by child-sized figures with massive heads and reflective eyes. Modern reports frequently mention “mechanical stalking,” where small, pale shapes appear to pace vehicles from within the thick brush, and an unnerving “audio vacuum” where the sounds of the surrounding suburbs suddenly cut to absolute silence.
