Graestone Manor at 4049 Root Road is a Victorian mansion built in 1865, with the wider property’s history running back to the Newcomb family in the 1830s before it passed to the Root family, who bred racehorses and once kept a quarter-mile track called Roots Trotting Park on the grounds. That horse-breeding past still shapes the haunting, with repeated reports of phantom hoofbeats, carriage sounds, and a man’s voice or whistle moving through the house and property. Other recurring activity includes a woman seen in the windows, dark shadow masses, the smell of cigar smoke and perfume, and disembodied voices in the halls and basement. The manor’s own paranormal pages name two of its best-known resident spirits as Mina, linked to the main parlour, and Flora L. Root, linked to the Red Room, where guests have reported being watched in bed, hearing a woman’s voice, and even finding scratches or marks on waking. The basement has its own reputation, with stories of a “portal” behind the stairs, unseen footsteps, jars crashing, and a male shadow form moving from the back corner toward the steps. Modern activity is built into the site now: it runs overnight stays, guided ghost hunts, and investigations, and has been featured on Most Terrifying Places, Kindred Spirits, The Ghost Finders, and Within These Walls.
