While the hotel is a complex of historic French Quarter buildings, the energy is strictly concentrated in Building Number 5, a structure that seems to act as a permanent record for the agony of battlefield medicine. The atmosphere in this wing is notoriously thick, with guests reporting a sudden, metallic scent of blood and the sharp, medicinal sting of antiseptic manifesting in empty hallways. The most significant phenomenon is a recurring “time-slip” in the elevator and second-floor corridor; witnesses describe the doors opening to reveal a frantic, full-spectrum scene of a 19th-century surgical ward, complete with moaning soldiers on blood-soaked gurneys and surgeons in stained aprons, only for the entire environment to vanish when the elevator doors cycle.
