Inunaki Village

Inunaki Village is one of Japan’s most infamous modern urban legends, centred around the abandoned Old Inunaki Tunnel in the mountains near Miyawaka. The core story claims a hidden settlement beyond the tunnel operates under the sign “The Constitution of Japan does not apply here,” where outsiders are allegedly attacked, phones lose signal, and vehicles are found burned or abandoned. Some versions describe a brutal murder of a young couple inside the tunnel in the late 1980s, while others claim disfigured villagers or masked figures guard the road at night. Although a real historical Inunaki hamlet once existed in the area (largely submerged after dam construction), the urban legend of a “lawless village” was further cemented by the 2020 horror film “Howling Village” (Inunaki Mura), which brought the story into mainstream Japanese pop culture.
