Inunaki Tunnel

The Old Inunaki Tunnel is one of Japan’s most infamous haunted tunnels, directly tied to the broader Inunaki Village legend and a real 1988 murder case in which a young man was brutally killed after being taken to the remote tunnel area. Local lore claims the tunnel marks the threshold to the so-called lawless village where the sign allegedly reads, “The Constitution of Japan does not apply here,” and where outsiders are warned not to enter after dark. Visitors and explorers frequently report screams echoing inside the tunnel, sudden cold air, shadow figures, and the apparition of a long-haired woman said to appear near the entrance or inside vehicles passing through at night. The tunnel’s isolation in the mountains, its association with violent crime, and decades of Japanese kaidan retellings and paranormal investigations have cemented it as one of Kyushu’s most feared “drive-through haunt” locations
