Jeju Island

Jeju is a stronghold of active shamanism where 18,000 deities are treated as living entities rather than folklore. The island’s spiritual landscape is defined by “Maiden Deities” (Cheonyeo Gwishin)—spirits of young women who died tragic, unnatural deaths and are now appeased as powerful village guardians to prevent them from becoming vengeful ghosts. A prime example is the Tosan Eighth-Day Shrine, where unique “snake cult” lore intertwines with the worship of a maiden spirit, solidifying the village’s reputation for potent, female-centric spiritual energy. Modern paranormal interest converges on the scars of the Jeju 4.3 Uprising, a genocide that left 10% of the population dead and created a landscape of mass graves and “lost villages” (Gonuldong). “Dark tourism” and EVP investigations now frequent sites like Darangshi Cave(where 11 victims were suffocated and sealed away) and the eerie Abandoned Circus near Saebyeol Oreum, where rotting props and costumes remain frozen in time.
