Case Overview
What happened at Colonial Park Cemetery?
Established in 1750, Colonial Park Cemetery is Savannah’s oldest surviving burial ground and the site of thousands of interments from yellow fever outbreaks, duels, and early frontier violence. Visitors most often report sightings of Rene Rondolier, a massively tall local man accused of murder in the 1800s; legends say he was lynched near the cemetery and still roams the grounds as a towering shadow after dark. Many gravestones bear scratched-out dates and altered ages, widely believed to be vandalism by Union soldiers encamped here during the Civil War—activity said to contribute to the cemetery’s restless atmosphere. Paranormal teams frequently document children’s laughter near the mass‐burial area and cold spots around the “hanging tree,” while multiple tourists have captured misty figures crossing the brick pathways at dawn.
