Rookwood Cemetery – Australia
Nearest city: Sydney, New South Wales
Opened in 1867 and spanning over 700 acres, Rookwood Cemetery is the largest necropolis in the Southern Hemisphere, with more than a million interments—and a long history of ghost reports tied to its Victorian sections. Visitors frequently describe a Victorian-era woman in a long black dress seen weeping near the old Anglican plots before dissolving into the mausoleums. Groundskeepers have reported the “Rookwood Child,” a small figure that darts between headstones and is heard giggling near the wrought-iron gates of the 19th-century Catholic section. The heritage rail line known as the Rookwood “Funeral Train”—which once carried bodies from Sydney’s Mortuary Station—has its own stories of spectral passengers glimpsed inside the abandoned platforms at night.
