Boggo Road Jail – Australia
Nearest city: Brisbane, Queensland
Opened in 1883, Boggo Road Gaol became infamous for brutal punishments, solitary confinement, and the execution of 42 prisoners. One of its most reported ghosts is Ernest Austin, the last man hanged in Queensland in 1913—guards claimed his laughter echoed through the cell blocks for months after his death. Visitors also encounter the “Woman in the Silk Dress,” believed to be a former warden’s wife seen gliding along the upper walkway; the sound of her skirts brushing the railings is often heard before her figure appears. Footsteps, slamming cell doors, and male voices shouting orders are common during investigations, especially in Division Two, where inmates once endured the notorious “black hole” punishment cells.
