Biltmore Estate – USA
Nearest city: Asheville, North Carolina
Completed in 1895 for George Washington Vanderbilt II, the Biltmore Estate is the largest privately owned home in the United States—and long rumored to be haunted by members of the Vanderbilt family. Staff and visitors report hearing whispered conversations and a man’s voice calling “George?” in the library, believed to be the spirit of Edith Vanderbilt, who was known to speak to her husband there after his death. In the swimming pool room, guests describe splashing sounds, laughter, and wet footprints around an empty, waterless basin—phenomena documented on multiple ghost tours. Shadow figures have also been seen moving across the basement corridors and servants’ quarters, where former employees once worked and lived.
