Kanayama Dam & Tunnel – Japan

Nearest city: Kamogawa, Chiba Prefecture

Built in 1982 within the steep forested valleys south of Kameyama, Kanayama Dam and its adjoining mountain tunnels have earned a reputation as one of Chiba’s most unsettling shinrei spots. Local legends describe phantom hands brushing car windows, shadowy figures at the tunnel mouths, and a woman’s scream echoing through the access road at night. Drivers claim headlights sometimes dim or engines stall midway through the longest tunnel, followed by the sound of footsteps pacing around the vehicle. Rumors tie the hauntings to fatal construction accidents during the dam’s excavation and to several recorded car crashes on the winding descent toward Kamogawa. Paranormal explorers have captured EVP bursts and unexplained thermal anomalies in the upper gallery tunnel, where moss-covered retaining walls drip with condensation even in summer.
