Built during the late Ayutthaya Kingdom in the early 18th century, Wat Kudi Dao—the “Monastery of the Star Pattern”—was once a royal meditation site under King Borommakot before falling to ruin after the Burmese invasion of 1767. Among its shattered stupas and vine-covered chedis lingers one of Thailand’s most unusual temple legends: the spirit of Pu Som Fao Sap, a headless guardian said to protect hidden treasure buried beneath the site. Visitors have reported glimpsing a tall, headless shadow near the main prang or feeling sudden gusts of cold air while offering incense at night. Locals believe Pu Som Fao Sap appears to ward off looters and the unworthy, while monks and paranormal investigators alike record faint chanting, flickering lights, and orbs around the temple grounds after midnight.
