Hürtgen Forest – Germany

Hürtgen Forest – Germany

Nearest city: Hürtgen, North Rhine-Westphalia

Fought between 1944 and 1945, the Battle of Hürtgen Forest claimed over 30,000 lives in what soldiers called “Green Hell.” The dense woodland still hides bunkers and war relics, and visitors report phantom gunfire, soldiers’ voices, and flickering lights among the pines. One enduring legend concerns the apparition of Ernest Hemingway, who covered the battle as a war correspondent and is said to appear near old command trails before vanishing into the mist. Paranormal investigators continue to capture EVPs and electromagnetic anomalies near Vossenack and the Weisser Weh valley, where some of the fiercest fighting occurred.
