El Silbón: The Deadly Whistler – Venezuela
Nearest city: Los Llanos, Los Llanos Region
One of Venezuela’s most chilling legends, El Silbón (The Whistler) is said to be the cursed ghost of a spoiled young man who murdered his father. For his crime, his grandfather forced him to carry a sack of bones for eternity, wandering the plains of Los Llanos. His presence is heralded by a distinctive whistle — rising in pitch if he is far away, and lowering when he is near. Those who hear it are doomed to sickness, madness, or death. Encounters often describe a towering skeletal figure carrying a bag of bones slung over his back. Still a fixture in Venezuelan folklore, El Silbón has inspired films, ballads, and ghost stories across South America.
