Case Overview

What happened at The Vanishing Hitchhiker of Uniondale?

On Easter weekend, 1968, a young engaged woman named Marie Charlotte Roux died in a car accident while riding in the back seat of a Volkswagen Beetle that flipped near Barandas, about 20 km from Uniondale. Years later, starting in 1976, motorists driving the N9 between Uniondale and Willowmore claimed to see a young woman matching Marie’s description (dark hair, dark clothing) hitchhiking in misty or rainy conditions. Witnesses say when they stop and she enters the car, she vanishes a few kilometers later; some report car doors opening/closing by themselves or feeling phantom presence in the back seat. The tale became widely publicized in local media; her family eventually made a plea for the stories to stop. Sightings reportedly tapered off after her fiancé (Giel) died in another car accident around 1984.
