Ropen- Dinosaur Bird – Papua New Guinea
Nearest city: Kampalap Village, Umboi Island
The Ropen is a cryptid said to resemble a living pterosaur, reported by villagers on Umboi Island in Papua New Guinea. Described as a large, leathery-winged creature with a wingspan of 12–30 feet, the Ropen is infamous for its bioluminescent glow, often spotted as a streak of light flying across the night sky. Missionaries in the 1990s documented multiple eyewitness accounts, and expeditions since have collected testimony of a creature that feeds on fish and carrion, sometimes seen perched in trees. While skeptics suggest misidentified bats or birds, sightings into the 2000s (some even filmed) have made the Ropen one of the most enduring “dinosaur bird” legends in the Pacific.
