Case Overview
What happened at Montauk Monster?
In July 2008, a strange carcass washed ashore near Montauk on Long Island, quickly dubbed the “Montauk Monster.” The creature had leathery skin, sharp teeth, and an odd beak-like snout, sparking theories that it was a genetic experiment from the nearby Plum Island Animal Disease Center. While experts suggested it was likely a decomposed raccoon or turtle without its shell, photos went viral and cemented it as one of the most famous modern cryptid mysteries. Sightings of similar carcasses along Long Island beaches since then have kept speculation alive.
