In 1997, a local man filmed a large, dark form moving offshore, sparking national headlines and debate. Known simply as the Van Gölü Canavarı (“Lake Van Monster”), it remains one of Turkey’s most enduring cryptid legends, with fishermen and villagers still reporting unexplained shapes in the lake.
