Built in 1930 as one of the Iceland Touring Association’s earliest huts, Hvítárnes has become infamous as the most haunted hut in Iceland. Stories focus on the apparition of a woman in white who appears inside the dormitory, and at least one hiker claimed to be shoved by unseen hands while spending the night alone. Visitors also report doors banging in calm weather and a heavy, watchful presence around the hut. Its eerie reputation is strong enough that it now features on Icelandic ghost tours and is a regular target for paranormal investigators.
