Hells Gate Airtram – Canada
Nearest city: Boston Bar, British Columbia
Where the Fraser River is squeezed into a 35 m (115 ft) throat, explorer Simon Fraser named it “Hell’s Gate” after his harrowing 1808 passage. CPR blasting through this stretch in the 1880s was deadly work, and a 1914 rockslide choked the river and devastated salmon runs (the mid-1940s fishways you see below the tram are the fix). Staff and night-tour visitors tell of disembodied shouts and whistles ricocheting off the canyon walls, a lantern-like light tracing the old rail grade, and sudden cold spots on the lower decks and suspension bridge.
