Built in 1907 as the Dutch East Indies Railway headquarters, Lawang Sewu (“Thousand Doors”) became notorious under Japanese occupation when its basement was used as a torture chamber. Today the crumbling colonial building is famed for sightings of shadow figures and the ghost of a headless Dutchwoman wandering its halls. Paranormal investigators and viral videos have captured strange lights and apparitions, making it one of Indonesia’s most infamous haunted sites.
