The LaLaurie Mansion – USA
Nearest city: New Orleans, Louisiana
Built in 1832 and once home to the wealthy socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie, the mansion hides a dark past that shocked even a city long familiar with ghosts and voodoo. By day, Madame LaLaurie entertained the elite with lavish parties. But in 1834, a fire led rescuers to a horrifying discovery in the attic, where enslaved people were found chained, tortured, and mutilated in horrific conditions. The extent of the cruelty became the talk of the city, and a furious mob stormed the mansion. Madame LaLaurie fled the city, vanishing into legend, but the echoes of what happened inside the house have never left. Since then, the mansion has changed hands many times, and with each new owner come stories of moans, screams, phantom footsteps, and sudden, icy chills. Some have seen apparitions of shackled figures in the hallways. Others report an overwhelming sense of dread near the upper floors, where the attic once held its horrors.
