Built between 1884 and 1922 by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune, this sprawling Victorian mansion was designed to appease or confuse spirits she believed were haunting her. The house features 160 rooms, 10,000 windows and architectural oddities like doors to nowhere, staircases into ceilings and a Séance Room where Sarah reportedly consulted spirits nightly. Paranormal reports include phantom footsteps, disembodied voices, cold spots and sightings of Sarah herself, especially in the Hall of Fires and Witch’s Cap Room
